I had the opportunity to design the November 2016 cover of Discover magazine. Our cover story was about a island where the last mammoths were thought to have died out. The land itself did not present a very compelling cover, so I wanted to go with a mammoth. Our closest public museum has a mammoth skeleton on display, and my photo editor, creative director, and I worked with the museum to join our photographer, William Zuback, on set in the early hours. I downloaded a 3-D model of a mammoth skeleton from the Smithsonian website and used it to come up with some early mock-ups, showing the sort of angle I was looking for. I art directed on site, and did all the retouching work myself, smoothing out and adding background to allow room for the words.
