This layout for the September 2013 issue of Discover magazine was a complex piece, requiring a number of different visual solutions. It covers cosmologist Alexander Vilenkin's theories about the beginning of time, focusing on bubble universes. Taking this bubble idea to heart, photo editor Ernie Mastroianni and I hired photographer Mark Ostow shoot Vilenkin for the story, complete with bubble machine. However, I wanted a more engaging lead, and for that I turned to illustrator Roen Kelly, who created both the realistic looking bubble galaxies in the lead and the interior illustrations. I did the bulk of visual research for these graphics and art direction. I added arrows (for "start") and energetic typography/bright colors to bring the lead to life.
