Most of the time one powerful image will do the trick for a magazine lead, but for this May 2014 story about a devastating cancer afflicting the Tasmanian devil, I thought a grid of images might have more impact. I was inspired by Instagram filters — still fairly new in 2014 — and modified a Photoshop action to create a unifying look for all images in the story. I worked with illustrator Kellie Jaeger to create a map of the growing problem, and our photo editor Ernie Mastroianni to edit down a huge pool of images to those that would work best together for the most impact.
